Netflix Original Series: Narcos

A review of the Netflix Original Series Narcos

A chronicled look at the criminal exploits of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.

Sullywood Rating: 8.5/10

If you have to pick one show to watch on Netflix, choose House of Cards. If you decide to pick two shows on Netflix to watch, choose Narcos. If you are unfamiliar with the term “Narcos”, you aren’t alone.  In order to provide some education, what little I can contribute, a Narco is a term for a drug dealer, which is what the basis of what this show is all about…..drugs.

If you ever watched HBO’s Entourage with some regularity, you will remember Vince’s passion project Medellin, where he played the infamous Pablo Escobar.  While Medeillin crashed in Entourage, Narcos explodes with greatness on Netflix.  If the fictional character of Vince could have made this version his Medellin, he could die a happy man.

Narcos does a great job showing the audience every point of view, every detail, and every person you could ever want to know about in regards to the South American drug boom.  The sights, sounds, and attention to detail truly make you feel like you are there with either Pablo or the men trying to bring him down.

Narcos concentrates on mainly two point of views, that of the “Narcos” and of the men trying to bring them down.  In my opinion, the acting is stellar all around, but Wagner Moura (Pablo Escobar) truly shines above the rest throughout the whole season.

I will warn you, get your reading glasses ready, because around 60-70% of the show is subtitled I would say.  While that may be annoying to some viewers, I believe it only enhances the authenticity of the series.  It’s like when you watch any World War 2 movie and the Germans all speak in English the whole time, easy to understand, but a bit silly.

Narcos has been green lit for a 2nd season, but how far they can take the series is anyone’s guess.  You could just Google everything, but I would suggest leaving yourself blind going into the show.  I myself knew close to nothing about Escobar’s past and what happened to any of the agents.

Basically, you won’t be disappointed with this show and its definitely binge worthy.  Enjoy.
